Psychological Effects Of Acne

Acne is very, very common as a skin condition among adolescents. It also occurs with quite a lot of frequency among adults. There are many different types, and treatments have been developed to take care of each. Acne doesn't just affect physical appearance. In fact, it can cause major psychological suffering by those affected, so that someone suffering from acne may even avoid attending social events with friends or colleagues because they feel so poorly about their appearance.

Today, appearance is a major focal point of our society and of social situations in general. Our appearance is very important in the eyes of many, sometimes seemingly more important than who we are. This places great pressure on teens to look good, and can continue to affect them negatively as they become adults. Many people think it important to conform to what is "normal," or least what they perceive it to be. What happens, then, if someone suffers from a severe form of acne and it significantly alters the physical appearance?

This is especially problematic in teens, because they still are developing as people, and are trying to figure out who they are. What happens to them now can in turn have an effect on who they become.

And the psychological difficulty does not necessarily stop there. Adults, too, can suffer the same psychological effects of heavy acne, and sometimes say that it makes them feel undesirable and ugly.

Studies have shown that acne's psychological effects can lead to eating disorders, depression, and social anxiety. This can start when one is a teenager, but can carry over to adulthood, thus resulting in serious psychological difficulties. What can keep this from happening?

Many who suffer from acne try to cover up their acne, usually by using cream concealer or another type of makeup. These products can be purchased over the counter, and will cover up most mild to moderate acne. If the acne is particularly severe, a doctor can prescribe something to conceal more severe breakouts.

Diet does play a role as well, and there may be foods that influence breakouts. If you feel that there are certain foods that make your acne worse, stay away from them. If it helps, that's great. In fact, some believe diet may be more of an influence in adult acne than in acne that occurs in adolescents, but a good healthy diet can never be started too early.

Especially for teens, the perception that acne is caused by having poor hygiene is also a major psychological blow. This isn't necessarily true, especially in cases of severe acne, but it can still cause those who suffer from it to become more anxious about how others see them, and this in turn can cause self-esteem to plummet.

Most importantly, taking care of your acne will help you feel better about yourself. To do this, the problem has to be treated. You can try to do so on your own, or you might get help from your doctor. Either way, finding a treatment that works for you is imperative. If you feel anxious and depressed about your condition, talk to a doctor or another professional about the feelings and find out what you can do to take care of them. When your body is healthier, so is your mind.
